Changes to visa laws in 2011 have raised increasing concerns that the UK is becoming inhospitable to students from all over the world. Most recently,\u00a0a University of Sheffield report<\/a>\u00a0revealed international students pumped \u00a3120 million into the economy of the city.<\/p>\n

The report says that 8.9% of Sheffield students continue to boost the economy of Yorkshire and Humberside after graduating\u00a0by contributing their skills and labour to the region.<\/p>\n

But debates surrounding the subject have been widely based on misleading numbers and inflated statistics. Here are just 5 – and the facts behind them.<\/p>\n

Myth 1:\u00a0International students are immigrants<\/h1>\n

im\u00b7mi\u00b7grant\u00a0<\/i><\/b>[<\/i>im<\/i><\/b>-i-gruhnt]\u00a0<\/i>noun<\/i><\/b>\u00a0a\u00a0person\u00a0who\u00a0migrates\u00a0to\u00a0another\u00a0country,\u00a0<\/i>usually\u00a0for\u00a0permanent\u00a0residence<\/i><\/b>.<\/i><\/p>\n

Did you know that most international students leave the UK by the end of their course? Did you know\u00a0Erasmus<\/b>\u00a0students (an international programme where students study part of their course in another country) only stay in the country for between 6 months and a year? Did you know most\u00a0scholarships<\/b>\u00a0from abroad dictate students must come back to their home countries?<\/p>\n

According to a\u00a0UK Border Agency report<\/a>:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

“The student route is a\u00a0<\/i>temporary migration route<\/i><\/b>, with students expected to leave on completion of their studies.”<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

By definition, international students are\u00a0not permanent residents of the UK.\u00a0<\/b>But international students are still included in net immigration figures.<\/p>\n

Technically, students aren’t immigrants, but educational transients, making the number of actual immigrants seem much larger than it really is.<\/p>\n

The number of immigrants has decreased because fewer foreigners are coming to study in the UK, but the number of foreign permanent residents in the UK remains roughly the same.<\/p>\n
