As a first attempt at our ‘Who’s Who’ series<\/a> following key individuals in health, I thought it might be worth starting with Mark Simmonds, the Conservative MP and former health spokesman. This was kicked off by a post on Sturdyblog<\/a> which succinctly gives some backround:<\/p>\n

“Mark Simmonds is the former Conservative Shadow Health Spokesman and a vocal supporter of the government\u2019s controversial Health and Social Care Bill. Circle Health pay Mr Simmonds\u00a0\u00a350k a year<\/strong>\u00a0(on top of his \u00a365k MP salary)\u00a0for 10 hours\u2019 work a month<\/strong>, as \u201can advisor<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

“Circle Health is<\/a>\u00a0a \u201csubsidiary in a complex corporate structure that spans the British Virgin Isles and Jersey\u201d. It\u2019s backers include Paul Ruddock and Crispin Odey \u2013 two of the biggest Tory party donors.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This was “in the light this morning\u2019s news of\u00a0a private company being awarded, for the first time, the running of a hospital<\/a>. And which company is the beneficiary of that\u00a0\u00a31bn deal<\/strong>? It is Circle Healthcare.”<\/p>\n

His latest entry in the House of Commons register of members\u2019 financial interests is here:

\nIt shows payments received for his work as chair of Mortlock Simmonds Brown Ltd (known as msbl), and a shareholding in Mortlock Simmonds Ltd. msbl describes itself as a \u201cspecialist retail property advisor to occupiers and landlords\u201d (from its website here:\u00a0http:\/\/www.msblproperty.com\/about.php<\/a>\u00a0). Its website has a section setting terms and conditions to which anyone using it apparently agrees:http:\/\/www.msblproperty.com\/legal.php<\/a>
\nThe register appears to describe Circle Healthcare as a \u201csocial enterprise\u201d.
