{"id":765,"date":"2013-03-01T13:58:20","date_gmt":"2013-03-01T13:58:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helpmeinvestigate.com\/health\/?p=765"},"modified":"2021-10-22T07:03:43","modified_gmt":"2021-10-22T07:03:43","slug":"nhs-publishes-social-media-guidance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/helpmeinvestigate.com\/health\/2013\/03\/01\/nhs-publishes-social-media-guidance\/","title":{"rendered":"NHS publishes social media guidance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhsemployers.org\">NHS Employers<\/a>, the health service\u2019s human resources group, has published advice to managers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhsemployers.org\/Aboutus\/Publications\/Pages\/HR-social-media-NHS.aspx\">encouraging staff use of social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The publication acknowledges the pressures on human resources staff to control negative online coverage \u2013 but concludes that an \u201cactive and honest social media presence\u201d will improve the health service.<\/p>\n<p>This advice for open engagement ranges across the service, from Department of Health managers to clinicians and administrative staff with personal accounts.<\/p>\n<p>However, it still recognises that many NHS contracts explicitly forbid \u201cbringing the organisation into disrepute\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The issue of free speech within the NHS is of particular relevance following the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/health\/healthnews\/9869331\/Head-of-NHS-ignored-warnings-that-patients-were-in-danger-alleges-whistleblower.html\">NHS United Lincolnshire scandal<\/a> \u2013 where two whistle blowers were forced from their posts after warning of care failings to rival Mid-Staffordshire NHS Trust.<\/p>\n<p>Both managers subsequently spoke to the media, one of them breaking a gagging order to do so.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tweetthis\" style=\"text-align:left;\"><p> <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"tt\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=NHS+publishes+social+media+guidance+http%3A%2F%2Fhelpmeinvestigate.com%2Fhealth%2F%3Fp%3D765\" title=\"Post to Twitter\"><img class=\"nothumb\" src=\"http:\/\/helpmeinvestigate.com\/health\/wp-content\/plugins\/tweet-this\/icons\/en\/twitter\/tt-twitter.png\" alt=\"Post to Twitter\" \/><\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"tt\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=NHS+publishes+social+media+guidance+http%3A%2F%2Fhelpmeinvestigate.com%2Fhealth%2F%3Fp%3D765\" title=\"Post to Twitter\">Tweet This Post<\/a><\/p><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NHS Employers, the health service\u2019s human resources group, has published advice to managers encouraging staff use of social media.
