{"id":1098,"date":"2013-12-02T20:14:14","date_gmt":"2013-12-02T20:14:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helpmeinvestigate.com\/olympics\/?p=1098"},"modified":"2021-10-25T08:08:57","modified_gmt":"2021-10-25T08:08:57","slug":"the-6-5m-cost-of-policing-the-olympic-torch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/helpmeinvestigate.com\/olympics\/the-6-5m-cost-of-policing-the-olympic-torch\/","title":{"rendered":"The \u00a36.5m cost of policing the Olympic Torch &#8211; get the data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Policing the Olympic torch procession cost taxpayers almost \u00a36.5m nationally, according to a series of Freedom of Information requests by <strong>HMI Olympics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The spending includes the costs incurred to local police authorities throughout the UK for the 56 days the Olympic Torch went around the country.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/cf.datawrapper.de\/12Fbh\/2\/\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"webkitallowfullscreen\" mozallowfullscreen=\"mozallowfullscreen\" oallowfullscreen=\"oallowfullscreen\" msallowfullscreen=\"msallowfullscreen\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Metropolitan Police Service<\/strong> spent the most &#8211; not surprisingly as the torch spent a week in London and was perhaps the most obvious target for disruption.<\/p>\n<p>Over a quarter of their spending &#8211; half a million &#8211; was spent on overtime for police and staff. The figure includes a \u00a3850,000 grant the Metropolitan Police Service received from the Home Office.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/cf.datawrapper.de\/0X63J\/1\/\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"webkitallowfullscreen\" mozallowfullscreen=\"mozallowfullscreen\" oallowfullscreen=\"oallowfullscreen\" msallowfullscreen=\"msallowfullscreen\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>If grants are not taken into account the <strong>Police Service for Northern Ireland<\/strong> (PSNI) emerges as the top spender.<\/p>\n<p>Help Me Investigate <a href=\"http:\/\/muckraker.me\/2013\/09\/08\/revealed-the-1m-cost-of-policing-the-northern-ireland-olympic-torch-relay-revealed-the-1m-cost-of-policing-the-northern-ireland-olympic-torch-relay-revealed-the-1m-cost-of-policing-the-northern-ire\/\">previously reported on spending by the body on the Northern Ireland investigative site The Muckraker<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to their response the <strong>City of London Police<\/strong> did\u00a0not\u00a0incur <em>any<\/em>\u00a0costs\u00a0to\u00a0police\u00a0the Olympic torch procession because they incorporated\u00a0any\u00a0additional resources required\u00a0within the\u00a0existing\u00a0policing\u00a0strategies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kent Police<\/strong> also treated the event as &#8220;business as usual&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/cf.datawrapper.de\/IqNb0\/1\/\" height=\"400\" width=\"600\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Police and staff overtime form almost half the costs. However there were some curious items of spending, such as batteries and Dog Police Support Unit Kits for \u00a34.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;<strong>Mutual aid<\/strong>&#8216; &#8211; responsible for \u00a3690,000 of spending &#8211;
