{"id":638,"date":"2012-07-18T09:42:09","date_gmt":"2012-07-18T09:42:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/helpmeinvestigate.com\/olympics\/?p=638"},"modified":"2021-10-18T08:24:02","modified_gmt":"2021-10-18T08:24:02","slug":"how-universities-allocated-their-3-olympic-torchbearer-places-from-samsung","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/helpmeinvestigate.com\/olympics\/how-universities-allocated-their-3-olympic-torchbearer-places-from-samsung\/","title":{"rendered":"How universities allocated their 3 Olympic torchbearer places from Samsung {updated}"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following <a href=\"http:\/\/helpmeinvestigate.com\/olympics\/thes-university-vice-chancellors-grabbing-olympic-torch-places-for-themselves\/\">our post on July 6<\/a> on THES&#8217;s report on vice chancellors carrying the Olympic torch, we can provide further background on the processes used to allocate torchbearer places.<\/p>\n<p>At <strong>Brunel University<\/strong> a spokesperson explains:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Two places were for students and one for a member of staff.\u00a0 We took a different approach to selecting each Torchbearer.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, we invited the 16 highest achieving students from the 2011 graduating class to submit a 300 word piece on why they would be a suitable person to represent the University as a Torchbearer.\u00a0 We chose Ainsley Bell from the ten applications.\u00a0 His story can be seen on the relay website.\u00a0 It was quite compelling and an easy decision to make.<\/p>\n<p>The second place was awarded to Michelle Quaid by the elected committee of the Union of\u00a0Brunel\u00a0students who had asked the students to nominate their classmates who have gone the extra mile for sport.\u00a0 Michelle\u2019s story is also on the website.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The final place was for a member of staff.\u00a0 It was suggested to us that this should be offered to the Vice Chancellor.\u00a0 He thought that it would be inappropriate for him to be the nominated torchbearer.\u00a0 Instead he suggested that Ian Campbell should be nominated due to his 20 years of volunteering to organise Paralympic sport.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A spokesperson for <strong>Manchester Metropolitan University<\/strong> said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;[Two students] were nominated by the Athletics Union \u2013 part of the Student Union \u2013 they were looking for people who\u2019d gone the extra mile by contributing to local communities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Samsung suggested our third \u2018Samsung\u2019 bearer should be a senior member of staff, so the sports development board of the university invited the vice-Chancellor to run, a task which he accepted.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So far Leeds Metropolitan University, Newcastle University and Nottingham Trent University &#8211; where two pro-vice chancellors and a vice chancellor carried the torch respectively &#8211; have declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unrelated<\/strong>: Queen Mary University London\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.qmul.ac.uk\/media\/news\/items\/79288.html\">had these two students<\/a>\u00a0nominated, as well as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.qmul.ac.uk\/media\/news\/items\/se\/75276.html\">\u00a0Dr Michael Proulx<\/a>, chosen &#8220;for his research into blindness and his ongoing engagement with the blind community&#8221;.
