Live in Handsworth and a village in Corfu 50-50 thereabouts. Both places matter to me. I divorced my car two years ago and have been cycling the city for twelve years. I’ve given evidence to Parliamentary select committees on allotments and parks and am very interested in the urban balance between green space and buildings and between space for human interaction and space for getting around, believing we tend to allow a disproportionate amount of space for the latter, incurring increasingly unsustainable costs in pollution, energy use and separation. I enjoy the comforts of life in the rich world but suspect any shared future has got to involve happy asceticism. My specialist academic study has focused for thirty years on those relationships between politicians and managers that contribute to good government.
