Carol Miers’s interview with wheelchair racer Jack Binstead is published today in The Guardian.
Today is the day that Jack was most likely to have carried the torch, had his nomination by 20 people been successful.
Instead he and his family are flying out of the country.
“Jack – known as Wheelz to his friends – received 20 nominations to carry the torch from supporters across the UK, but was overlooked by torch relay organisers Locog. Instead, today’s line-up of torchbearers includes BP’s Olympics operations manager and Chai Patel, one of the biggest donors to the British Olympic Association, according to data collected for our website, Help me investigate the Olympics.”
Jack’s story is featured in the ebook 8,000 Holes: How the 2012 Olympic Torch Relay Lost its Way. You can download the book for free, or pay – with all proceeds going to the Brittle Bone Society, of which Jack is an ambassador.
